Bring down “The Plastics”

And no, they’re not the ones from the “Mean Girls” movie.

According to the news from independent.co.uk, the world is currently producing nearly 300 million tons of plastic each year – a significant amount of which will end up in the oceans. Unfortunately, although plastic is a useful product, many of these products are created for single-use – with an estimated 50 percent of plastics used once and thrown away. We all know that plastics are made out of purely chemical and when they are burned they could release a lot of chemicals. While burning, it would be hard to breathe because the plastic burns with a lot of smoke. Plastics release a toxic smoke that could be lethal. Plastics also release Dioxine and Furon, which are hormone-disrupting and cancer-causing chemicals. In all, there are many different ways that burning plastic can harm the environment.

The production and use of plastic has many negative effects. First, burning plastic affects the human health. Toxic chemicals leach out of plastic and are found in the blood and tissues of nearly all of us. Exposure to them can lead to cancer, birth defects, impaired immunity, endocrine disruption and other ailments. Second, while plastic is thrown into landfills, it contaminates the soil and groundwater with harmful chemicals and microorganisms, and the effects of marine pollution caused by plastic are immeasurable. Just like on land, even in the oceanic areas, the effects of plastic on marine life has started to be felt. Lastly, they also release carbon dioxide, which is a greenhouse gas and contributes in causing climate change.

Clearly, the excessive use of plastics cause extreme harm to our environment and to ourselves, yet some establishments still promote the usage of plastics instead of helping to eradicate it. We ask for your support to make a greener world happen. Our aim is to convince people to avoid using plastic as much as possible by promoting the use of eco-friendly materials; like tote bags for shopping, and reusable tumblers for drinking. By simply avoiding one-time use plastics as much as possible, we can make a big difference and save the Earth including all that live in it.

Our plan to promote this change is to create a site, post articles and videos concerning the issue, support related petitions at Change.org, and of course be examples for others to follow. By doing so, we hope to make a change to save our Mother Earth from the wrath of The Plastics.
